Host Odisha bagged one gold and one bronze medal in the 47th National Junior (U-19) National Championship which concluded at Biju Patnaik Multi-Purpose Indoor Stadium in Niladri Vihar, Bhubaneswar today. Vishakha Toppo won the gold medal in U-19 mixed doubles, albeit with Mizoram partner Lalramsanga C, while rising star Tanvi Patri claimed the bronze in U-19 girls singles.

Seeded fifth, Vishakha and Lalramsanga defeated second seed Andhra Pradesh-Telangana pair of Bhargav Ram Arigela and Vennala K in the hard-fought final by 2-1 games (21-16, 10-21, 21-18).

This was the maiden Junior National title for Rourkela shuttler Vishakha, who trains at Odisha-SAI Regional Badminton Academy in Bhubaneswar. Lalramsanga hails from Durtlang locality in Aizawl and trains at SAI National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati.

Vishakha also put up a notable performance in girls doubles with State-mate Pragati Parida as partner. The Odisha duo reached quarterfinals before going down to fifth seeded Uttarakhand pair of Gayatri Rawat and Mansa Rawat 14-21, 18-21.

Mizoram-Chhattisgarh combination of Lalrempuii and Tanoo Chandra claimed the girls doubles gold medal, defeating Andhra Pradesh pair of Durga Isha Kandrapu and Taarini Suri in the final in straight games.

Asian U-15 singles champion Tanvi settled for the bronze medal by reaching semifinals, where she lost to eventual champion Prakriti Bharath from Tamil Nadu by 1-2 games. Thirteen-year-old Tanvi got off to a sparkling start as she won the first game 21-13. But 17-year-old Prakriti dug deep into her resources to win the next two games 22-20, 22-20.
