  Mens Jr Hockey Asia Cup: India beat Pakistan; Retain title

India U-21 Team retained the title in the 10th Mens Junior Asia Cup Hockey Tournament, defeating Pakistan 5-3 in the exciting final in Muscat, Oman today. Araijeet Singh Hundal once again proved to be the trump card for India, scoring four goals in the final. Japan won the bronze medal, beating Malaysia 2-1.

This is the third time in a row and fifth time overall that India won the gold medal in the Junior Men Asia Cup Hockey Tournament. The earlier four gold medals were bagged in 2004, 2008, 2015 and 2023. Besides the five gold medals, India has won two silver (1996 and 2000) and two bronze (1987 and 2012) in this continental tournament.

 

Defending champions India won all six matches they played in the current edition. They vanquished Thailand 11-0, Japan 3-2, Chinese Taipei 16-0, South Korea 8-1 at the league stage and Malaysia 3-1 in the semifinals. Amir Ali led the 20-member Indian team with Rohit as vice-captain.

The India team featured three players from Odisha. They were Anmol Ekka, Mukesh Toppo and Rosan Kujur. Hockey India, on this occasion, announced a cash reward of Rs 2 lakhs to each player and Rs 1 lakh to each support staff for their impeccable title defence and dominating performances in the Mens Junior Asia Cup.

Former India goalkeeper PR Sreejesh is the head coach of the Indian team. A total of 10 teams are participating in the Mens Junior Asia Cup 2024. Junior Asia Cup served as a qualifying event for the 2025 Mens FIH Junior World Cup.
