Odisha boy Sattwik Swain won the silver medal in the Under-8 open category of the FIDE World Cadet Chess Championship which was held at Montesilvano in Italy from 15 to 26 November 2024. India made it one-two with Divith Reddy Adulla from Telangana bagging the gold medal. The bronze medal was claimed by Guo Ziming from China.
The top three finishers scored nine points each from 11 rounds. Medals were awarded on tiebreak scores. Bhubaneswar boy Sattwik remained unbeaten in the championship, winning seven games and drawing four. He started his campaign with a rating of 1787 and gained around 95 rating points by finishing runner-up.
This was the second FIDE World medal for Sattwik, who won the bronze in the U-8 open category of the FIDE Chess World Cup, held in Batumi, Georgia earlier this year in July. Student of DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, Sattwik takes coaching at King Chess Academy, under Biswajit Ray. He also trains at the State Government-run Professional Chess Training Academy, PROCHESSTA.
