Senior Women NFC: Odisha set up final against Manipur
21 Dec 2024

Odisha will meet Manipur in the final of the 29th Senior Women National Football Championship for Rajmata Jijabai Trophy 2024-25 (Final Round) at RKM Ashram Ground in Narainpur, Chhattisgarh on December 23. In the semifinals today, Odisha beat last-year runners-up Haryana 2-0, while title favourites Manipur humbled West Bengal 3-0.

Odisha captain Pyari Xaxa scored both the goals against Haryana. India forward Pyari, who is fondly called Ferrari for her speedy run, was awarded as the Player of the Match. Odisha goalkeeper Sasmita Parida also put up impressive performance as she managed to block the wave of attacks from Haryana in the second half.

Odisha will play the final for the seventh time. Odisha won the title once in the 2010-11 season in Bhilai. They finished runners-up on five occasions, losing to Manipur in the final. The last time two teams met in the final was in the 2018-19 edition in Cuttack when Manipur edged out hosts Odisha 2-1.

Odisha and Manipur also met each other at the group stage of the ongoing edition with the latter winning 2-0. Odisha will be determined to avenge that defeat in the final and regain the trophy. Odisha qualified for the semifinals by securing the second place in Group-A league with seven points from four matches. They won three, drew one and lost one.

Odisha booked berth in the Final Round after emerging Group-F toppers in the qualifying round, defeating Ladakh 7-0, Madhya Pradesh 12-0 and holding Arunachal Pradesh to 0-0 draw. Pyari scored six goals against Madhya Pradesh and two against Ladakh.

The first edition of the Senior Women National Football Championship was held in Manipur in 1992. Manipur have been the most dominant side in the history of the championship, winning the title 22 out of the 28 times so far.

West Bengal and Tamil Nadu have won two titles each, while Odisha and Railways have been champions once each. Odisha won their only title in 2011, trouncing West Bengal 5-0 in the final in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh. Odisha has finished runners-up five times (2002, 2008, 2010, 2019) so far.
