Jr National Athletics: Odisha end campaign with 11 medals
11 Dec 2024

Host Odisha bagged a total of 11 medals, including five on the fifth and last day in the 39th National Junior Athletics Championships, which concluded at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar today. The 11 medals featured six gold, two silver and three bronze.

Sprinter Dondapaty Mrutyam Jayaram became the most successful Odisha athlete, capturing three gold medals. He completed a sprint double today, adding the U-20 men 200m gold to the 100m yellow metal he won with a personal best of 10.50 seconds earlier on the second day.

A trainee of Bhubaneswar- based Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics High Performance Centre, Jayaram secured the 200m title with a time of 21.27 seconds. He was also a member of the Odisha U-20 mens 4×100m relay team that bagged the gold medal on the third day.

Speaking on his stellar performance, Jayaram said, “I am really happy to get three golds as this is my last year of U20 competition. I achieved my personal best in the 100m and also was part of the meet record setting 4x100m relay team. It is not easy to win three golds for a sprinter and I am very happy that I achieved this feat. I hope to do even better in the future.”

“Doing it in front of my home state crowd makes it even more special. The Odisha government and Reliance Foundation have been a big support. I will now focus on the National Games and World University Games, which are coming up next year and aim to achieve my goals there,” Jayaram added.

Sprinter Pratik Maharana, thrower Ommkar Prasad Nanda and middle-distance runner Laxmipriya Kisan were three other gold medal winners for Odisha on the concluding day. Pratik won the title in the U-18 men 200m run, clocking 21.28 seconds. He also established a new meet record, erasing the previous record of 21.34 seconds, held by Shanmuga Srinivas since 2019.

Ommkar won the U-18 men shot put gold with a personal best of 19.96 metres, while Laxmipriya claimed the yellow metal in in U-20 women 800m run with a time of 2:14.44. Odisha earned one bronze medal each on the fourth and last day.

Ani Salbam won the bronze yesterday in U-16 boys 600m run, clocking 1:22.50, while P Arpita Archana Sahoo won the bronze today in U-20 women javelin with an effort of 45.14 metres.
