  Junior Women Hockey Asia Cup: India win successive gold

India won the gold medal for the second time in a row at the Womens Junior Asia Cup Tournament, defeating China in the nerve-wracking final, via shootout in Muscat, Oman today. India goalkeeper Nidhi saved three strokes to help the defending champions win the shootout 3-2 after play in the regulation time ended in 1-1 draw.

Tan Jinzhuang scored the first goal for China but Kanika Siwach struck the equaliser in the third quarter for India as the match went into a penalty shootout. Korea won the bronze medal, defeating Japan 3-2 in shootout after both the teams scored one goal each in the regulation time.

 

India ace Deepika Sehrawat bagged the top scorer of the tournament awards with 12 goals to her name, including three hat-tricks. Hockey India, on the occasion, announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for each player and Rs 1 lakh to each support staff as a gesture for winning the championship.

Earlier in the semifinals, India defeated Japan 3-1. India qualified for the semifinal by finishing second in Poo-A with nine points from four matches. They beat Bangladesh 13-1, Malaysia 5-0 and Thailand 9-0, but lost to China 1-2. By reaching semifinals, India also qualified the FIH Women Junior World Cup 2025, to be held in Chile.

Jyoti Singh was the captain of the 20-member Indian team, which featured three from Odisha. Odisha players were: Sunelita Toppo, Mamita Oram and Puja Sahoo. Sunelita was awarded as the rising star of the final match.

15 Dec 2024 (Final): India (Kanika Siwach 41-FG) drew with China (Tan Jinzhuang 30-PS) 1-1. Shootout: India (Sakshi Rana, Ishika, Sunelita Toppo) beat China (Hao Guoting, Liu Tangjie) 3-2. PoM: Tan Jinzhuang (China). RSoM: Sunelita Toppo (India).
