  Weightlifting: Jyoshna wins Asian Youth gold with new record

Rising Odisha star Jyoshna Sabar won the gold medal with a new record in the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships at Radisson Blu Hotel in Doha, Qatar today. She achieved the glory in the 40 kg youth girls category, lifting 60 kg in snatch and 75 kg in clean & jerk.

The 16-year-old lifter from Gajapati district, set the new Asian Youth record in her total lift of 135 kg. A trainee of Bhubaneswar-based Odisha Tenvic Weightlifting High Performance Centre, Jyoshna secured three gold medals in total.

Odisha lifters made the country proud as Preetismita Bhoi claimed one silver medal in the 45 kg youth girls group. A cadet of Dhenkanal Sub-Centre of Odisha Weightlifting HPC, Preetismita won the silver in clean & jerk with a lift of 85 kg. Overall, she finished fifth, lifting 60 kg in snatch and 145 kg in total.

 

A total of 28 lifters, including two from Odisha, are representing India in this edition of the Asian Youth & Junior Championship, which is scheduled to conclude on December 25. The 28 lifters include 15 in the junior division (age 15 to 20) and 13 in youth section (age 13 to 17).

The championship features 237 athletes, with 127 men from 19 countries and 110 women from 16 countries. India bagged a total of 42 medals in the previous edition of the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships, held in Greater Noida last year.
