Mens Asian Champions Trophy Hockey: India win 6th title
05 Nov 2026

Host India rallied from a goal down to beat Japan 4-1 in the final to successfully defend the title in the 9th Mens Asian Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament at Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali, Punjab today.

This was the third successive and sixth overall title for India. They won their last five gold medals in 2011, 2016, 2018, 2023 and 2024. Malaysia claimed the bronze medal with a 5-2 win over South Korea earlier in the day.

Led by draf-flick expert Harmanpreet Singh, India won all five of their league matches to storm into the semifinals, where they crushed South Korea 8-1. At the league stage, the hosts beat Bangladesh 13-0, China 5-2, Japan 4-1, Malaysia 4-2 and South Korea 8-0 at Surjit Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar.

Top six hockey-playing countries of Asia participated in the tournament. Bangladesh replaced Pakistan, who withdrew from the event, raising security concerns and sought a neutral venue, which was rejected by the Asian Hockey Federation.

Three players from Odisha represented the 20-member Indian team. They were: Amit Rohidas, Shilanand Lakra and Amandeep Lakra. Shilanand was awarded as the Player of the Final Match. He scored a total of five goals in the tournament.

Harmanpreet baged the Player of the Tournament award and also finished as the top scorer with 10 goals to his name. With the addition of the 10 goals, his tally of senior international goals became 250. Krishan Bahadur Pathak received the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award.

Hockey India announced a cash reward of Rs 3 lakh for each player and Rs 1.5 lakh for each member of the support staff. The title-winning run of India was a perfect farewell to midfielder Nilakanta Sharma, who played his last international match -- having announced earlier that it would be his last tournament in the national jersey.
