A total of 122 competitors vied for medals in two events (time trial and mass start) and across eight categories, starting from youth to elite. Six cyclists bagged two gold medals each. They were: Sasmita Panda, Pratam Paramanik, Sneha Das, RS Upanshu, Riya Kumari and Manisha Sahoo.
It was quite disappointing for the cycling sport in the State that the Odisha Cycling Association did not bother for the media coverage of the championship. No news was published in any of the leading newspapers.
OCA president Minati Mohapatra, who often promotes herself as a cycling Arjuna Awardee, ignored requests to share the names of medal winners, even though it was a fundamental responsibility of the State body. Of course, OCA secretary Prasanna Rout heeded to the requests and shared the results even though two days after the conclusion of the championship and that too in instalments.
OCA office-bearers must understand that promotion and development of a sports discipline depends a lot on media coverage. News and images of competitions and the achievements of the cyclists draw the attention of the people and help in popularizing the sport. The State governing body needs to do it through its own platform or seek the support of media organisations.
