*     This is the 111th edition of the tournament, which was first held in 1905.
*     Rafael Nadal is the defending mens singles champion.
*     Nine-time champion Novak Djokovic is vying to equal all-time record of 22 mens major singles titles of Nadal.
*     He is also attempting to be the first man to win ten Australian Open titles, and the second man to have ten titles at a single major (after Nadal at the French Open).
*     Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Djokovic are in contention for the world No 1 ranking at the start of the tournament.
*     Either Alcaraz or Ruud can clinch the top spot by reaching the fourth round and final, respectively.
*     Tsitsipas and Djokovic need to win the tournament in order to gain the top ranking.
