DESCRIPTION:
* Hockey India League (HIL) was first held in 2013 and continued up to 2017.
* The tournament will be revived after a gap of six years.
* Hockey India League 2024-25 will be the sixth edition.
* The sixth edition will feature eight teams, including two from Odisha, and a total of 32 matches.
* Teams will play league matches in one group and the top four teams will qualify for semifinals.
* The eight teams are: UP Rudras, Team Gonasika, Tamil Nadu Dragons, Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers, Vedanta Kalinga Lancers, Hyderabad Toofans, Delhi SG Pipers and Soorma Hockey Club.
* The two Odisha teams are Vedanta Kalinga Lancers and Team Gonasika.
* Bhubaneswar-based Kalinga Lancers were co-owned by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited and Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation from 2013 to 2017 before the ownership was acquired by Vedanta Limited in 2024.
* Minining leader Tarini Prasad Mohanty has bought the ownership of Team Gonasika, a new franchise, whose base, however, will be Visakhapatnam.
* Manpreet Singh will lead Vedanta Kalinga Lancers.
* The HIL 2024 player auction, held in Delhi on October 13 and 14, witnessed more than 1000 players going under the hammer.
* Team India captain Harmanpreet Singh emerged as the costliest buy in the auction, acquired by Soorma Hockey Club for Rs 78 lakh.
* Odisha Olympian Amit Rohidas was bought by Tamil Nadu Dragons for 48 lakh.
