02 Mar 2008

Army Green (Bangalore) will meet Railway Football Club (Kolkata) in the final of the 3rd All-India Padmanava Memorial Football Tournament at the Unit-I High School ground here on March 3. In the semi-finals played on Saturday, Army Green defeated Central Railway (Mumbai), while Railway Football Club (RFC) beat their Kolkata opponents Shyamnagar Tarun Sangh (STS) by 2-1 identical margin.

Bimal Thappa and Sanglina put Army Green in a commanding position by scoring a goal each in the 30th and 70th minutes. Kasif Jamal pulled one back for Central Railway just before the final whistle. Armyman Raman Sangha was adjudged the player of the match. In the floodlit second semifinal, Sanjib Mishra gave RFC an early lead by bulging the opposition net in the very first minute. Stung by the early blow, STS launched several potential attacks, which eventually resulted in Seikh Sabir Ali getting the equaliser in the 16th minute. It was RFC captain Suraj Mondal, who finally clinched the win by netting his team`s second goal in the 61st minute. He was named the player of the match.
