Utkal Karate School provided another boost for shooting in Orissa by felicitating the state`s non-resident international girl shooter Shriyanka Sadangi at the school premises in Bhubaneswar today. Born in Sambalpur and brought up in Delhi, Shriyanka has emerged as yet another international medal prospect for India and her adopted state Haryana.

‘‘I have been selected to represent the country in the 10 metre air rifle event of the World Junior Shooting Championship to be held at Munich, Germany from July 28. I am now ranked second or third in the country in junior category and fifth in senior group. I am working hard and hoping to win a medal in the Munich championship,’’ said 15-year-old shooter after being felicitated by Utkal Karate School.

An 11th standard commerce student of Loreto Convent School, Delhi, Shriyanka has so far garnered two silver and two bronze medals in Junior National and School National championships. She came to limelight by winning a bronze in the team event of the 2007 Junior National Championship at Ahmedabad.

Next year, petite Shriyanka claimed a bronze in the School Nationals and a silver in Junior Nationals in Kerala. Last year, she secured the individual silver in the Junior Nationals at Jalandhar, scoring 394 out of possible 400.

Daughter of Col Sitanshu Charan Sarangi, Shriyanka made her international debut last year at Suhl (Germany), where she finished fourth in the ISSF Super Cup Junior International Championship. This year she represented the country in the same championship but without any notable success.

Being the daughter of an Army officer, Shriyanka developed interest for shooting naturally. The talent in the girl was also spotted by Army, under the scheme ‘Mission Olympics: Catch them Young’ in 2006. ‘‘Subedar Krishan Singh and Subedar Pratap Patil taught me the basics of shooting and helped me sharpen my skills as well,’’ admitted Shriyanka, who regards Olympic silver medallist Rajya Vardhan Singh Rathore as her idol.

Her first medal came at the Delhi Open Shooting Championship in 2006 when she claimed a bronze. The same year she also became a medallist in the Haryana State championship. Abhinab Bindra’s Olympic gold medal has inspired her a lot and she aims to emulate Bindra’s glorious feat in the future.

Shriyanka is here to spend her holidays with younger brother Shreyanshu, a promising tennis player and uncle (father’s elder brother) Subhranshu Charan Sarangi, an eminent tennis coach.

The up-coming shooter’s holiday trip became more delightful when came to know about the availability of an indoor shooting hall here at Utkal Karate School. ‘‘The infrastructure facility is very good but needs to be equipped with air conditions,’’ she said after spending some time at the school, testing rifles and targets.

School founder Hari Prasad Pattanayak presented a memento to Shriyanka and wished her success in the ensuing World Junior Championship. Later talking to mediapersons, Shriyanka said she would be happy to represent Orissa in National championships after formation of the State shooting body.
Shriyanka also stated that shooting had become a passion for her and she would like to take it up as a carrrer option.
