  Bhubaneswar stages National Cycle Polo Championships

Bhubaneswar Cycle Polo Association, under the aegis of Odisha Cycle Polo Association, played host to the 31st Sub-junior Boys, 35th Junior Boys and 37th Men National Cycle Polo Championships here at Kalinga Stadium from February 25 to 27. Altogether 26 states and three units of Services participated in the championship, which was staged for the first time here.

Territorial Army (TA) regained the men’s title after a gap of four years, defeating Kerala in the final by 14-8 goals today. This was the fourth overall title for Territorial Army, who had claimed their earlier three in 2007, 2008 and 2010.

 

Earlier in the semifinals, TA caused a major upset by eliminating last four years’ champions Indian Airforce 12-11 in sudden death. Other semifinal also went to the wire with Kerala getting the better of Indian Army 7-6 via golden goal. Indian Force finished third, beating Indian Army 11-7. Harsal Bagde of Territorial Army was cynosure of the championship, bagging the best player, best scorer and outstanding performer awards.

Kerala emerged champions in junior boys’ category, prevailing over Maharashtra 9-6 in the final. West Bengal finished third, hammering Karnataka 10-0. Faizal N of Kerala was adjudged the best player in this category.

The sub-junior crown went to Chhattisgarh, who thrashed Kerala 9-2 in the summit clash. Third position was claimed by Uttar Pradesh, who edged out Maharashtra 6-5. The best player award in the sub-junior category was pocketed by Dushyant of Chhattisgarh. Host Odisha put up its best performance in the sub-junior category, reaching quarterfinals, where they were trounced by Uttar Pradesh 7-0.

Col Vineet Mittal, Commanding Officer of 118 Territorial Army (Nagpur), handed over the trophies at the closing function. Cycle Polo Federation of India secretary Gajanan Burde, Odisha Cycle Polo Association secretary Raj Kishore Mohanty and Bhubaneswar Cycle Polo Association secretary Manoj Kumar Nisanka were present on the occasion.

Maharashtra bt Karnataka 5-4; Kerala bt West Bengal 6-0; Chhattisgarh bt Andhra Pradesh 9-1; Uttar Pradesh bt Odisha 7-0.
Junior boys: Maharashtra bt Jharkhand 12-0; West Bengal bt Uttar Pradesh 7-3; Kerala bt Chhattisgarh 9-0; Karnataka bt Madhya Pradesh 3-0.
Men: Indian Army bt Maharashtra 6-0; Territorial Army bt Uttar Pradesh 6-3; Kerala bt West Bengal 8-0; Indian Airforce bt Chhattisgarh 10-4.
