Ameek, Amrutjay, Asish win TS singles titles
26 Jun 2015 BHUBANESWAR

Odisha duo Ameek Kiran Batth and Amrutjay Mohanty and Jharkhand boy Asish Sinha won the singles titles in different categories of the AITA-OTA Talent Series U-12 and U-14 Tennis Tournament, which was held at Kalinga Stadium here from June 22 to 26.

Local favourite and top seed Ameek emerged under-14 girls’ singles champion, outplaying an indisposed Mekhala Manna of West Bengal 6-1, 6-1 in the final. A trainee of Bengal Tennis Association, Mekhala could not play to her potential as she was suffering from fever for the last two days. But her coach Gary O`Brien felt she did a good job. ``Mekhala was playing an AITA tournament for the first time outside the state. She was lacking in experience. But despite the handicaps, she gave a good fight in the final,`` observed O`Brien.

Notwithstanding her opponents` indisposition, Ameek put up compact performance and fully deserved the title. This was the second AITA under-14 singles title and fifth overall for Ameek, who is a trainee of city-based Farhan Tennis Academy.

Home favourite and top seed Amrutjay captured the title in under-12 boys’ singles, defeating second seed Ritabrata Sarkar in the summit clash 6-3, 6-2. This was the second AITA u-12 singles crown and third overall for Amrutjay, who is also a pupil of coach Farhan Ali. Amrutjay had a chance to bag a title double, but the top seeded Bhubaneswar lad squandered it by crashing out in the under-14 boys’ singles quarterfinals.

Eighth seed Asish Sinha, who eliminated Amrutjay in the under-14 singles, went on to grab the title, getting the better of second seed Pratyush Mohanty (Odisha) in the final 6-4, 6-2. Title winners in each category gained 15 points each, while the losing finalists collected 12 points apiece.

Altogether 95 players from West-Bengal, Jharkhand, Assam and Odisha participated in the five-day tournament, which was organized by Odisha Tennis Players’ Parents’ Association (OTPPA). Jamini Mohan Mohanty and Jatin Batsya were the tournament director and tournament referee respectively.
