Odisha Govt rewards Dutee, Srabani with jobs
23 May 2016 BHUBANESWAR

Despite missing Rio Olympics qualifying mark repeatedly, leading Odisha women sprinters Dutee Chand and Srabani Nanda received major rewards today as the duo was provided with respectable jobs by the Government of Odisha. Both Dutee and Srabani were, till date, working in Central Railway and East Coast Railway respectively.

Dutee was appointed as Assistant Manager in the Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC), while Srabani was recruited as Junior Manager in the Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC). The posts are equivalent to the Group-B Officer Post. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik handed over the appointment letters to the international sprinters at the Odisha Bhawan in New Delhi.

The CM told reporters that his government has already adopted a rule to ensure direct recruitment of meritorious sportspersons of the state in Odisha Police. And, 59 sportspersons have been provided jobs till date under this rule.

Dutee, who had joined the Mumbai Central Railway after she failed to get any assurance from the state government, expressed happiness that she would be able to play for her state in future. Srabani too hailed the government for this much needed gesture.

Expressing happiness over her appointment in OHPC, Srabani said this is a very good initiative of the state government which will inspire the upcoming and promising athletes of the state. ``We have set a parameter for appointment of sportpersons in government jobs. Those who can fulfil the parameter, they would be assured of government jobs,’’ said Sports and Youth Affairs minister Sudam Marandi.
