07 Jun 2008

Kalpana Das, Orissa`s first conqueror of the Mount Everest, returned home in an ailing condition to. She was received at the Bhubaneswar airport by her mother and family members in the evening with mediapersons and lensmen jostling to record the homecoming scene both in words and pictures. A lawyer by profession, Kalpana Das (41) reported to have been successfully scaled the 8,848-metre-high Mount Everest in her fourth attempt earlier last month. In May 2004, the mountaineer from Sariapara village in Dhenkanal district, scaled 7,300 metres without oxygen. Two years later she went up to 8,048 metres. Kalpana has nursed the dream scaling the Mount Everest since she was seven years old. This year she made her third attempt on March 23. To do that she was said to have practised dawn-to-dusk every day on the 785-metre Kapila Hill, 22km from her village.

Kalpana in her own admission was fortunate that sponsors always came forward with generous donations for the expedition. In January, 2008, ArcelorMittal Group presented a cheque of Rs 5 lakh. Bhusan Steels, Coal India Limited, Orissa Mining Corporation and Indian Metals and Ferro Alloys also sponsored her expedition.
