Title hat-trick for Sunrise in FAO First Division League
18 Sep 2016 CUTTACK

Sunrise Club clinched a glorious hat-trick in the FAO First Division Football League by winning the title for the third year in a row here at Barabati Stadium today. In the hard-fought final that was played under lights, Sunrise Club edged out East Coast Railway 4-1 in penalty shoot out. The match went to the tie-breaker after play in the regulation time ended in goalless draw.

Sunrise Club received a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, while runners-up East Coast Railway settled with Rs 50,000. Odisha Cricket Association secretary Asirbad Behera was the chief guest of the closing ceremony, which was presided over by host Football Association of Odisha (FAO) president and Barabati MLA Debashish Samantaray. Trophy and cash prizes were also given away to the champion and runners-up teams of the FAO Second Division League.

Twelve veteran footballers and two referees of the state were felicitated on the occasion. They were: Birendra Singh, Purnendu Pratap Swain, Lalatendu Pradhan, Kailash Chandra Naik, Ashok Baliyarsingh, Pravat Kumar Mohapatra, Pravakar Bardhan, Subash Kumar Patra, Abhimanyu Pujari, Nageswar Pradhan, Prafulla Kumar Mishra, Abhinna Sundar Rout (all playes); Ashis Mitra, D Bhagaban Das (both referees).

Football Association of Odisha (FAO) organised the First Division League from July 31. Altogether 26 club and institutional teams are participated in this year’s First Division League, which was inaugurated by Additional Police DG Satyajit Mohanty. Odisha Cricket Association secretary Asirbad Behera and Cuttack District Athletic Association working president Pankaj Locahn Mohanty were present in the opening ceremony.

After completion of Group League, which featured 41 matches, 12 teams advanced to the Super League. But after Odisha Police pulled out of the tournament, the 11 remaining teams were placed in two groups and they  played a total of 25 super league matches to determine the four semifinals spots. The First Division League would conclude with the final match on September 18.

Meanwhile, act of violence created a bad precedent on August 26 when Jay Durga Club coach Amit Behera and three of their players (Prasant Kumar Behera, Mahesh Kumar Sahoo and Raja Das) misbehaved with the match official over a decision of the referee and manhandled him in the 73rd minute of the match against SAI Training Centre who were then leading 2-1.

But taking strong action in the incident, FAO suspended Jay Durga Club, their coach and the three offending players from participating in any of the FAO or AIFF official tournaments till 31st December 2017. The SAI team was declared as the winner of the match and match referee lodged an FIR against the offenders in the Cantonment Police Station. Defending champions Sunrise Club are aiming for a hat-trick of titles this year.
