Five-wicket haul by pace spearhead Basant Mohanty and unbeaten century each by opener Anurag Sarangi and captain Govind Poddar powered Odisha to a thumping nine-wicket win over Assam in their second Group-A match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy Tournament at Feroz Shah Kotla Ground in New Delhi today.
Put into bat, Assam were bowled out 207 with captain KB Arun Karthik and J Syed Mohammad doing the bulk of scoring with a half-century each. Among Odisha bowlers, Mohanty returned with career-best List-A haul of five wickets for 26 runs, while fellow pacer Deepak Behera and left-arm spinner Dhiraj Singh picked up three and two wickets apiece.
In reply, Odisha started the chase with a setback as opener Sandeep Pattnaik was dismissed for one in the fifth over. But that turned out to be the only success for Assam as Sarangi and Poddar muscled Odisha to victory with a majestic unfinished partnership of 206 for the second wicket.
Sarangi slammed an unconquered 104 (121 balls, 9x4, 3x6), which was his second List-A hundred. Poddar was more aggressive of the duo, hitting 15 boundaries and one six in his 90-ball unbeaten knock of 100. This was also the second List-A century for Poddar. This was the first win in two matches for Odisha and fetched them four points. Odisha will next play Baroda tomorrow.
