23 Aug 2017 BHUBANESWAR

A gem of a goal by Sunil Soren guided Capital High School, Unit-3 to a 2-0 win over Mother’s Public School in the last Group-H match of the MCL Cup 29th Bhubaneswar Inter-School Football Tournament here at Unit-VI Boys’ High School Ground today. This was the second straight win for Capital High School and they set up a quarterfinal match against former champions Sainik School.

Earlier in the day, Sainik School secured their place in the last-eight stage, via higher goal difference, despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Rama Krushna Sikhya Kendra in Group F. Though both the teams tied for the top place in the group with four points each, Sainik qualified for the quarterfinals with a goal difference of 9-1, against 4-1 by Rama Krushna.

Capital High School forged ahead in style, thanks to the spectacular goal by Sunil Soren, whose35-metre free-kick from near the left side-line dipped into the net, slipping between the hands of Mother’s Public goalkeeper in the 13th minute. Prakash Nayak scored the second goal for Capital High School in the 41st minute.

Capital High School’s wonder-boy Chandan Naik, who hogged limelight last year by undergoing a training stint at FC Bayern Munich in Germany, was adjuded the player of the match for doing the spadework for both the goals. A mercurial forward, Chandan received the prize from former minister Padmanav Behera.

Earlier in the first match of the day, Rama Krushna Sikhya Kendra were first to take lead when Deepak Munlun scored in the 24th minute. But Sainik School fought back with determination to restore parity through K Arjun Reddy in the 34th minute. Deepak’s valuable goal fetched him the player of the match prize, which received from Tapan Kumar Mohanty, president of tournament organizers Unit-VI Athletic Association.

Today’s matches were conducted by match commissioner Maheswar Singh along with referees Saroj Moharana, Rajendra Barik, Chandrakant Barik, Sekhawat Khan and Bulbul Bhoi. The group league engagements will conclude tomorrow with Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) meeting IRC Village High School for the last quarterfinal spot.
