  Bureaucrats XI regain Tata Steel Friendship Cup

Bureaucrats XI regained trophy in the Tata Steel Friendship Cup Football Tournament, defeating host Tata Steel XI in the final by 5-3 goals, via penalty shoot out here at Kalinga Stadium today. The final went to the tie-breaker after play in regulation time ended in goalless draw. This was the sixth title triumph by Bureaucrats XI, who earlier reigned supreme for five years in a row from 2011 to 2015.

Earlier in the first semifinal of the one-day tournament, Bureaucrats XI edged out Legislators XI 4-2, also in penalty shoot out after play in the regulation time ended in 1-1 draw. SD Durga gave Bureaucrats XI the lead, while Nayagarh MLA Arun Sahoo equalized for Legislators XI with a spectacular long-range shot. In the second semifinal, Tata Steel XI eliminated defending champions Media XI by a solitary goal, which was scored in the second half by Mohan Singh Gagrai.

 

Odisha Development Commissioner R Balakrishnan, MLA Arun Sahu, Business Standard Resident Editor Dillip Satapathy, Odisha Sports Journalists’ Association president K Ravi, Tata Steel vice-presidents Sunil Bhaskaran (Corporate Services) and Arun Misra (Project Gopalpur & MD, Tata Steel SEZ) handed over the prizes to the champion and runners-up teams.

Bibhuti Biswal of Media XI was awarded the prize as best defender, Aditya Thakur of Tata Steel XI the best mid-fielder, Arun Sahoo of Leaders XI best forward, Amitab Thakur of Bureaucrat XI best goalkeeper, J D Pati of Bureaucrat XI promising player and Suresh Mahapatra of Bureaucrat XI fair player. Similarly, man of the match prizes of the first, second semifinal and the final were given to SD Durga, Mohan Singh Gagrai and Pradeep (Bureaucrats XI) respectively.

Odisha Sports Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera inaugurated the 11th edition of the annual tournament in the presence of ST and SC Development Minister Ramesh Majhi, Industry, Housing & Urban Development Minister Niranjan Pujari, Parliamentary Affairs & I&PR Minister Bikram Keshari Arukha,
MLAs Arun Sahoo, Additional Secretary Suresh Mahapatra, Statesman Bureau Chief K. Ravi, Tata Steel vice-presidents Sunil Bhaskaran, Arun Misra and and Chief Resident Executive Manikanta Naik.
