22 Oct 2017 CUTTACK

Subrat Das and Nishant Biswal regained the senior billiards and snooker titles respectively in the 24th Odisha State Billiards & Snooker Championship, held at Cuttack Club here from October 11 to 22, 2017. After trailing 0-2 and 2-3 in the senior billiards final match, top seed Das fought back nicely to beat second seed and former Junior National billiards runner-up Kunal Agarwal by 4-3 frames.

Subrat registered as many as three 50-plus breaks, including 84 as the highest to recapture the title after a gap of two years. This was the seventh senior state billiards title for Subrat, who had won his first in 2009.

Biswal regained the senior snooker title after a gap of four years, defeating Mohammad Raza in the final by 6-2 frames. This was the second senior snooker title for Biswal, who had won his first in 2012, also at Cuttack Club.

RAHUL WINS JUNIOR SNOOKER TITLE: Local school student Rahul Naik won the junior snooker title, defeating Avinash Mohapatra in the final by 3-0 frames earlier on October 12. This was the maiden state title for Rahul, who is a standard-IX student of St Xavier High School, located at Barbati Stadium.

Rahul happens to be a disciple of Subrat Das and participated in the qualifying round of the Sub-Junior National Billiards & Snooker Championship once.

Altogether 43 cueists, including five in junior snooker, are participating in the championship, which was organised by Billiards & Snooker Association of Odisha. Cuttack Club president Manoranjan Mohapatra and secretary Jasobanta Das handed over trophies at the closing ceremony. Tournament co-ordinator Govind Sharma was present on the occasion.
