A six-member Odisha squad bagged a total of five medals, including three gold in the 57th National Senior Inter-State Athletic Championships, which was held at Acharya Nagarjuna University ground in Guntur (Andhra Pradesh) from July 15 to 18.

Sprinters Amiya Kumar Mallick and Srabani Nanda captured the 200m gold medals in men and women categories, clocking 21.65 and 24.18 seconds respectively. The third gold was secured by Purnima Hembram in women’s 100m hurdles with a timing of 13.72 seconds.

Jauna Murmu captured both the silver medals in women’s 400m sprint and 400m hurdles, clocking 53.52 and 58.68 seconds respectively. Manoj Kumar Maharana, the sixth athlete from Odisha, finished 12th and last in men’s shot put and his effort was not even measured.

Odisha missed a few more medals as star sprinter Dutee Chand could not take part in the championships due to viral fever and was hospitalised. Srabani suffered injury after winning 200m gold and pulled out of the 100m event. Amiya also pulled out from 100m sprint after reaching semifinals.

Though the four-day championships was the last chance to attain qualifying marks for the IAAF World Championships, scheduled for August 4-13 in London, none of the Odisha athletes was able to make the cut.
