Both the men and women teams of Hockey Odisha suffered defeats in the quarterfinals of the 2nd Hockey India Five-a-side Senior National Championship at Chhatrapati Shivaji Stadium in Pune today. The men lost to Uttar Pradesh Hockey 6-8, while the women were mauled by Hockey Punjab 6-1.
Hockey Odisha women reached quarterfinals, winning two league matches and losing one in Group-A. They beat Hockey Karnataka 3-1 and Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu 8-3 but lost to Hockey Haryana 1-9. Hockey Odisha men reached the last-eight stage with one win and two defeats in Group-B league. They defeated Jharkhand 9-6 before losing to Hockey Punjab 5-6 and Hockey Haryana 3-5.
Five-a-side format is a new avatar of hockey in which each match shall be composed of three periods of 10 minutes each with a three-minute interval between two periods. Each team shall have nine players including one goalkeeper. Each team shall have five players on the field any time. Hockey Odisha is one of the eight teams to have qualified to compete in both men and woment sections of this championship.
