  KIIT women crowned East Zone chess champions

Host KIIT University won the women’s title in the East Zone Inter-University Chess Tournament, which was held at KIIT University here from November 1 to 4, 2017. The five-member KIIT team, comprising of Smaraki Mohanty, Akankhya Kabi, Sribrinda Rout, Saumyashree Sahoo and Krushna Mishra garnered 22.5 points from four matches (28 games) to finish at the top of the table.

University of Calcutta (19.5 points), Patna University (17 points) and Surguja University (16.5 points) secured the second, third and fourth positions respectively. In the men’s section, University of Calcutta emerged champions with 25.5 points. Jadavpur University (22 points), Utkal University (19.5 points) and Manipur University (18.5 points) finished second, third and fourth respectively. Utkal University was represented by Baivab Mishra, Sumit Kumar Banerjee, Ashis Pattnaik and Sourav Mohanty.

 

Top four teams in each category qualified to take part in All-India Inter-Zonal Chess Tournament, scheduled to be held at Jagaran Lake City University, Bhopal from November 10 to 14, 2017. KIIT and KISS secretary R N Dash graced the prize-distrubution ceremony as chief guest. KIMS adviser Dr R N Samanta, and KIIT Director Sports Dr Gaganendu Dash were present on the occasion.

1. KIIT University, Bhubaneswar (Smaraki Mohanty, Akankhya Kabi, Sribrinda Rout, Saumyashree Sahoo, Krushna Mishra), 2. University of Calcutta (Sohini Ganguly, Sanchari Chakraborty, Purvi Malani, Parama Kundu), 3. Patna University (Ankita Kumari,  Nupur Anand, Aarti, Swati, Waeza Afshan), 4. Surguja University (Pooja Baghel, Nisha Tirkey, Ankita Gupta, Poonam Beck, Priya Gupta).

MEN: 1. University of Calcutta (GM Diptayan Ghosh, IM Sayantan Das, Sumit Kumar, Saptorshi Gupta, Debarshi Mukherjee, Samrat Ghorai), 2. Jadavpur University (Arpan Das, Kaustuv Kundu, Raunak Mondal, Sayan Majumdar, Aditya Chowdhury, Satya Sekhar Mitra), 3. Utkal University (Baivab Mishra, Sumit Kumar Banerjee, Ashis Pattnaik, Sourav Mohanty), 4. Manipur University (Yengkhom Pritam Kumar Singh, Ningombam Herojit Meitei, Anand E, Taibangsatpa L, S Bidyananda).
