  Hockey Champions Trophy: India retain silver medal

India retained the silver medal in Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy as they lost to defending champions Australia 2-4 via shoot out (1-3) in the thrilling final at Breda, Netherlands today. This was repeat final of the 2016 Champions Trophy in London, where India had lost in shoot out (1-3). Host Netherlands won the bronze medal, defeating Olympic champions Argentina 2-0. Belgium finished fifth, defeating Pakistan 4-3 in penalty shoot out.

Today’s hard-fought final went to the shoot out after play in the regulation time ended in 1-1 draw. Australia took the lead when Blake Govers converted their first penalty corner in the 24th minute. India restored parity with a fine field gold by Vivek Prasad in the 42nd minute. It was a heart-rending loss for India, who under the captainship of goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, put up a dominat show.

 

In the shoot out, Aran Zalewski, Daniel Beal and Jeremy Edwards scored for Australia, while Matthew Swann and Tom Craig failed to beat Sreejesh. For India, only Manpreet Singh was able to score, while Sardar Singh, Harmanpreet Singh and Lalit Upadhyay failed. This was the 18th title triumph for Australia.

Sreejesh was adjudged the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament. The prizes for Best Player and Top Scorer were bagged by Aran Zalewski (Australia) and Gonzalo Peillat (Argentina- 6 goals). Jake Harvie and Colin Batch (both Australia) were named the Best Rising Player and Best Coach respectively. This was the 37th and last edition of Men’s Champions Trophy, which featured a total of six countries, 18 matches and 69 goals.

India qualified for the final, finishing second in the league stage with eight points from five games. They won two, drew two and lostone. The 18-member Indian team, including two from Odisha _ Birendra Lakra and Amit Rohidas _ started campaign on a spirited note, beating archrivals Pakistan 4-0 and Argentina 2-1.

India suffered their only defeat in their third game, going down to Australia 2-3. They drew their last two league matches against Belgium and Netherlands by 1-1 identical margin. India’s legendary mid-fielder Sardar Singh completed his 300 international caps in the league match against Argentina.

The 18-member Indian team includes two players from Oidsha _ defenders Birendra Lakra and Amit Rohidas. The team is being led by ace goalkeeper PR Sreejesh under whose captaincy the Indian team created history in the previous edition by clinching the silver medal after a tense final encounter with World No 1 Australia. It was India’s first podium finish at the Champions Trophy in 34 years.

“The team is a good mix of youth and experienced players. Rabobank Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy Breda 2018 is an extremely important tournament for the players to showcase their firepower as the team for the forthcoming Asian Games in Jakarta will be picked on the basis of performance at the XXI Commonwealth Games and the Rabobank Men’s Hockey World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018,” Chief Coach Harendra Singh had said before the start of the tournament.
