31 Mar 2018 BHUBANESWAR

The Final Round of the inaugural Indian Super Cup Football Tournament got off to a thrilling start with I-League 2017 Champions, Aizawl FC eliminating ISL 2018 Champions Chennayin FC 7-5, via penalty shoot out (5-3) in the first pre-quarterfinal match here at the Kalinga Stadium today.

Romanian midfielder Andrei Ionescu (22’ & 91’) scored both the goals for Aizawl FC while Brazilian captain Mailson Alves (89’) and Dhanachandra Singh (115’) netted for Chennayin FC within the regulation time and extra time.

The match finally went into a shootout which saw both teams being tested for their mental strength as Aizawl FC held their nerve whereas Chennaiyin FC missed one penalty in the form of Mohd Rafi which cost them the match.

Aizawl FC converted all of their five penalty kicks through Andrei Ionescu, Zikahi Dodoz, Masih Saighani, Kimkima and M-Ka, while Bikramjit Singh, Dhanapal Ganesh and Dhanachandra Singh scored from the sport for Chennaiyin FC. Andrei Ionescu was adjudged the Hero of the Match and he received a cash prize of Rs 25,000.

But despite excellent arrangement by joint hosts Football Association of Odisha and State Sports & Youth Services Department, the opening match failed to attract a much needed sizeable crowd. All the stands remained vacant notwithstanding the reduction of ticket price Rs 20 and liberal distribution of complimentary passes.

Incumbent Chandra Sarathi Behera inaugurated the tournament, while former Sports Minister Prabin Chandra Bhanjadeo handed over the Hero of the Match prize. It was a welcome relief that tournament commenced without any showbiz. In stead, more attention was paid for smooth and successful management of the event

The damaged area of the ground, where the grass died due to application chemical paint earlier on the occasion of qualifying matches, were repaired in time. The facilities for media improved a lot. According to the organizing officials, the All India Football Federation has given FAO a grant of Rs 70 lakh for the Super Cup, the budget of which has been estimated to be Rs 1 crore. The State Govt would spend around Rs 30 lakhs towards providing transportation, infrastructure facility and other logistics.
