  Chess: Debashis, Kiran, Manish win Commonwealth bronze

Odisha Grand Master Debashis Das, WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty and upcoming boy Manish Kumar bag one bronze each in Senior Open, Open women and Under-12 Open categories respectively in the Commonwealth Chess Championship, which was held at the Leela Ambience Convention Hotel in Delhi from June 26 to July 3, 2018. The championship features competition in 15 categories.

Debashis finished third with seven points out of a possible nine. He won six games, drew two and lost one. Indians asserted complete supremacy in the open category with Raiways International Master P Karthikeyan (7.5) and Delhi Grand Master Vaibhav Suri (7) winning gold and silver respectively.

Odisha and LIC Woman Grand Master Kiran Manisha won the bronze for finishing third among women in the open category with six points. She won five games, lost two and drew two. She, however, secured 27th positing in the final standings.

Manish Kumar secured five points out of a possible seven to emerge third in under-12 open group. He won four games, drew two and lost one. India also bagged gold (Sreeshwan Maralakshikari) and silver (M Pranesh) in this category.

Besides the main open event, the championship featured competition in U-8 Open, U-8 Girls, U-10 Open, U-10 Girls, U-12 Open, U-12 Girls, U-14 Open, U-14 Girls, U-16 Open, U-16 Girls, U-18 Open, U-18 Girls, U-20 Open and U-20 Girls categories. A total of 30 players from Odisha participated in different categories of the championship.
