  Hockey: Indian women end Spain tour with big win

The Indian Women’s Hockey team ended their Spain tour on a bright note as they thrashed the hosts 4-1 in the fifth and final match at the Consejo Superior de Deportes Hockey Stadium in Madrid today. This was the second win for World No 10 India and they drew the series 2-2 against World No 11 Spain.

Two Indian players achieved individual milestones during the series. Forward Vandana Katariya completed her 200th international cap in the third match on June 15, while defender Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam complete her 150 international caps in the second match on June 13.

 

The 20-member Indian team, including five from Odisha played the five-match series as an exposure tour ahead of the much-important Vitality Hockey Women’s World Cup London 2018 in July. Odisha players were: Sunita Lakra, Deep Grace Ekka, Namita Toppo, Lilima Minz and Anupa Barla.

The team was led by ace striker Rani Rampal while goalkeeper Savita shouldered the responsibility of the vice-captain. ``Also, this tournament provided us a platform to fine tune our game before the World Cup and the Asian Games in Jakarta,’’ said Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne.

June 18 (Match No 5):
India (Rani Rampal 33rd, 37th; Gurjit Kaur 44th, 50th) beat Spain (Lola Riera 58th) 4-1.
June 16 (Match No 4): India (Udita 22nd) lost to Spain (Lola Riera 10th, 34th; Lucia Jimenez 19th, Carmen Cano 37th) 1-4.
June 15 (Match No 3): India (Gurjit Kaur 28th, Lalremsiami 32nd, Rani Rampal 59th) beat Spain (Maria Lopez 3rd, Lola Riera 58th) 3-2.
June 13 (Match No 2): India (Anupa Barla 54th) drew with Spain (Berta Bonastre 14th) 1-1.
June 12 (Match No 1): India lost to Spain (Lola Riera 48th, 52nd; Berta Bonastre 6th) 0-3.
