Sumit Banerjee of host Madhu Sudan Law College won the individual title in the Utkal University Inter-College Chess Tournament, which was held at S R Chess Centre in Cuttack today. He scored full five points in the five-round tournament.

Sourav Mohanty of Samanta Chandra Sekhar College, Puri settled as runner-up with four points. Sambit Jena (3.5) and Soumen Amlan (3.5) of SCB Medical College, Cuttack finished third and fourth respectively, while Debi Prasad Biswal (3) of Shree Jayadev College, Naharakanta occupied the fifth position.

MS Law College Principal Prof Sukanta Kumar Nanda handed over the prizes at the closing ceremony. SR Chess Centre director Satya Ranjan Patnaik, international arbiter Tapas Kumar Mohanty and Utkal University sports fficer Ambika Prasad Ray were present on the occasion.

Top five finishers qualified to represent Utkal University in the East Zone Inter-University Chess Tournamen, scheduled to be held at Mahatma Gandhi University in Meghalaya in November this year.
