Pyari confirms candidature for top OCA post
27 Jun 2008

Cricket in Orissa made news today for a different reason when Rajya Sabha member Pyari Mohan Mohapatra accepted an offer to contest for the president``s post of Orissa Cricket Association, the richest sports body of the state. ````I am thinking to contest for the post on the request of people who feel that nothing is happening for the betterment of the game in the state,```` media reports quoted Mohapatra, who is also a leading member of the ruling BJD think-tank, as saying. He, however, said the final decision about his candidature would be known after June 30.

Mohapatra``s revelation only accelerated the election campaign which started months before the formal notification. According to OCA secretary Asirbad Behera, the election process would be completed before October and ahead of the India-England ODI which is slated to be held in the third or last week of November at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack, the only international cricket venue of the state, and the Challenger Trophy tournament to be held at the same venue from October 14. Affiliated units of OCA have been asked to submit the names of their representatives by June 30. The dates of the election schedule will be finalised at the council meeting to be held early next month.

This time a total of 152 members will cast their votes. The number of voters has increased from 148 after grant of affiliation to two new districts — Jajpur and Jagatsinghpur. In the last election, which was held in September 2004, polling was conducted only for the post of president and vice-presidents. Other office-bearers were elected uncontested. This time, the contest is expected to involve all posts, including that of the secretary, which has been held by Asirbad Behera for the past eight years. Sources say that this time Behera would be facing a tough opponent in Pradeep Chouhan, the OCA treasurer, who has been staying away from the affairs of the state body due to difference of opinion with the secretary. With OCA``s annual turnover averaging over Rs 10 crore, the ensuing election is sure to assume importance in terms of sports, politics and business.
