  Sunrise, Young Utkal win FAO 1st Div League titles

Sunrise Club and Young Utkal Club emerged Diamond and Gold group champions respectively in the FAO First Division League, which was organised by Football Association of Odisha (FAO) at Barabati Stadium here from August 18, 2018. This year’s First Division League, featuring a total of 27 club and institutional teams, was conducted in a new format, which involved three groups _ Diamond, Gold and Silver.

Sunrise Club secured the top spot in the Diamond Group with 16 points from seven matches. They won five, lost one and drew one. Top eight clubs of FAO vided for honours in the Diamond Group and the top four finishers qualified for the quarterfinals, which is called Super Cup. Odisha Police finished second, while the third and fourth positions were occupied by Odisha Sports Hostel and Rising Student Club respectively.
 

Gold Group champions Young Utkal Club garnered 16 points from six matches. They won five and drew one. The Gold Group was played among seven teams, among whom top three qualified for the Super Cup. Rising Star Club and Rovers Club finished second and third respectively in the Gold Group.

Sunshine Club emerged toppers in Silver Group and qualified for the Super Cup and for next year’s Gold League. A total of 12 teams battled it out in the Silver Group after being further divided into Group A and B. Though the two bottom-placed teams (Western Mahaveer and Yuva Vandhu Cultural Group) in Silver Group were supposed to meet each other on Sept 29 and the losers were set to be relegated to next year’s Second Division League, FAO did not disclose the outcome.  The Super Cup Tournament will take place from October 1 to 7.
