India bagged two silver and four bronze medals on the 13th day of the 18th Asian Games at Jakarka and Palembang in Indonesia today. In the overall medals table, India maintained its eighth position with a total of 65, which included 13 gold, 23 silver and 29 bronze.
India also equalled its highest medal record in one Asian Games with the 2010 Beijing Games, where the country had secured 65 medals including 14 gold, 17 silver and 34 bronze. Chine continued to lead the table with 270 medals (122+86+62).
MILESTONES:
* Dutee Chand won one silver medal each in 100m and 200m sprint, emulating the success of the legendary PT Usha in Asian Games.
* Dutee’s silver in 100m was India’s first in 20 years.
* Neeraj Chopra also became the second Indian after Milkha Singh to win a Commonwealth and Asian Games gold in athletics in the same year.
* Fouad Mirza became the first Indian to win an individual silver medal in equistrean competition in Asian Games.
* Athletics brought India the most medals (19) followed by shooting (9).
* The men`s table tennis team won the country`s first ever medal in table tennis at the Asian Games.
* PV Sindhu became the first individual badminton player to win silver medal in singles event of the Asian Games and Saina Nehwal first to win bronze.
* India secured a bronze medal in the men`s team regu event which was the country`s first medal in sepak takraw since the debut of the sport in the 1990 Asian Games.
* Hima Das won 400m silver with a new Indian record of 50.79sec, first Indian women to run under 51sec.
* Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian female wrestler to win a gold medal in the Asian Games.
* Rahi Sarnobat became the first Indian female shooter to win gold medal at the Asian Games on
* Abhishek Verma broke the Asian Games record in men’s 10m air pistol event.
* Indian men’s hockey team mauled Hong Kong 26-0 to break an 86-year-old record of highest goal difference, the previous best being 24-1 against USA in Berlin Olympic Games.
* Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was the flag bearer for India at the opening ceremony of the Games.
HEARTBREAKS:
* Two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar crashed out in the opening round of men’s 74kg freestyle wrestling.
* India lost one bronze medal in athletics as Govindan Lakshmanan, who finished third with a timing of 29:44.91 was later disqualified as he stepped inside on the bend to maintain his balance.
* In men’s hockey, defending champions India lost to Malaysia in the semifinals and failed to qualify for 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
* Indian women`s hockey team settled with silver after losing to Japan in the final 1-2.
ODISHA ANGLE:
* Dutee Chand became the most successful athlete from Odisha in Asian Games, bagging two individual silver medals.
* Dutee won the two silver in 100m and 200m sprint, clocking 11.32 and 23.20 respectively.
* Jackpot followed Dutee, as Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced a total cash award of Rs 3 crore for the two silver, while Odisha Olympic and Athletic Associations declared Rs 1 lakh each.
* Purnima Hembram finished fourth in women’s heptathlon, garnering a total of 5837 points.
* Gymnast Rakesh Patra missed out on team final by just 0.35 points.
* Badminton player Rutaparna Panda lost in women’s doubles first round with Arathi Sara Sunil as her partner.
* Rower Sanjukta Dungdung finished seventh in women’s pair and sixth in women’s four events.
* Jauna Murmu finished fifth in women`s 400m hurdles, clocking 57.48s.
