  Sr Women NFC: Manipur champs; Odisha runners-up

Manipur emerged victors in the 24th Senior Women`s National Football Championships, defeating hosts Odisha 2-1 in the summit clash at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today. The result marked the 19th occasion that Manipur won the trophy. Football Association of Odisha president Debashish Samantray handed over the trophy in the presence of Odisha Athletic Association secretary Asirbad Behera.

In the semifinals, Odisha edged out last year’s champion Tamil Nadu 4-3 in extra time, while Manur eliminated Indian Railways 4-3 in tie-breaker after play in regulation and extra time ended in goalless draw.

 

Odisha reached reached semifinals, defeating West Bengal 1-0 in quarterfinals. Earlier, Odisha entered the last-eight stage by winning both of their leageue matches in Group C. They beat Chhattisgarh and Telangana by 5-0 identical margin.

As many as 27 states participated in this championship, which was hosted by Football Association of Odisha (FAO). Matches were also held at Ravenshaw University Ground and Bidanasi Ground. The championship was inaugurated by Ravenshaw University Vice-Chancellor Prof Ishan Kumar Patro.
