TT Nationals: WB women, PSPB men win team crowns
06 Jan 2019 CUTTACK

West Bengal women and Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) won team titles in the 80th National Table Tennis Championship at J N Indoor Stadium here today. West Bengal women regained the title after a gap of two years when they upset reigning champions PSPB in the final 3-1.

The double defeat suffered by CWG gold medal winner Manika Batra cost PSPB dear. Mouma Das, the other star paddler of PSPB also lost her match. Mousumi Paul and Krittwika Sinha Roy won one singles each for West Bengal. Madhurika, who played the second singles, posted the only win for PSPB.

However, PSPB men lifted the trophy for the 21st time when they beat Gujarat 3-2 in a thrilling final with G Sathiyan winning the last rubber to deny Gujarat in what would have been their first team title in their maiden foray.

Achanta Sharath Kamal, as usual, provided the lead with an easy win over Ishaan Hingorani which was later consolidated by G Sathiyan against Harmeet Desai. Amalraj, playing the third singles, could not overcome a rampaging Guajrat left-hander and Junior and Youth National champion, Manush Shah, as the former national champion lost tamely (0-3). In the reverse singles Sharath lost to Desai as Gujarat made it 2-2. But Sathiyan cleaned up Ishaan in straight games to help PSPB retain the title.

Odisha Skill Development Authority Chairman Subroto Bagchi graced the the presentation ceremony as chief guest. Former Chief Secretary and Chairman Emeritus of Odisha State Table Tennis Association (OSTTA) D P Bagchi, Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) Secretary General M P Singh, Advisor Dhanraj Choudhury, vice-president V K Bawa, OSSTA president L N Gupta, senior vice-president Sanjay Singh and secretary Rabindra Kumar Parida were present on the occasion.
