  Hockey Odisha win Sub-jr Men Natl title 7th time

Hockey Odisha retained the title in the 9th Hockey India Sub-junior Men National Championship (Division-A), edging out Uttar Pradesh Hockey 3-1 in a fitting finale via shootout at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Hockey Stadium in Raipur, Chhattisgarh today.

Shootout rule was applied after play in regulation time ended in 2-2 draw. This was seventh overall title triumph for Hockey Odisha, who had captured their last six titles in 2018 (Saifai), 2015 (Delhi), 2014 (Ranchi), 2013 (Bhopal), 2012 (Rohtak), 2011 (Gurgaon).

 

Earlier Hockey Odisha edged out Sports Authority of India 2-1 in the first semifinal yesterday. Hockey Odisha secured semifinal berth, defeating Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy 3-2 in the first quarterfinal on 19 May. Hockey Odisha reached quarterfinals, winning three matches and drawing one in Pool-A league.

Led by Laban Lugun, Hockey Odisha humbled Hockey Andhra Pradesh 15-0, Namdhari XI 6-0, Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu 9-0 and drew with Hockey Punjab 1-1. They scored a total of 31 goals, while conceding just one at the league stage.

Hockey Gangpur-Odisha, the other Odisha team in the fray, however, bowed out from the league stage, losing three games and winning one in Pool D. Led by Ranjit Lakra, Hockey Gangpur-Odisha ended their campaign with a 4-2 consolation win over Hockey Rajasthan today.

Earlier in their first three matches, Hockey Gangpur-Odisha, the title winners of the 2016 edition at Imphal, lost to Manipur Hockey 1-2, Hockey Jharkhand 2-5 and Sports Authority of India 2-3.
