  Rohit Academy set to join u-12 World Cup qualifiers

Cuttack-based Rohit Football Academy has been selected to compete in the qualifying round of the Under-12 Boys`` World Cup Football Festival to be held at New Delhi on July 11 and 12. The qualifying round, named as Yakult-Danone Nations Cup-2008, will select the best out of 12 teams to represent India in the World Cup Festival to be held in Paris from September 5 to 7, Orissa Football Association secretary M A Alam said today. Altogether 40 countries are scheduled to participate in the Paris event.

 

JCT Football Academy (Phagwara), Shimla Young Football Academy (Delhi), Salgaocar Sports Club (Goa), PSNA Football Academy (Tamil Nadu), Olympian Rahaman Academy (Kozhikode), Chandigarh Football Academy, Sikkim Football Academy, Manipur Football Academy, Hindustan Football Academy (Delhi), Mumbai Football Club and Tata Football Academy are other 11 teams selected to compete in the qualifying round. According to Alam, International Football Federation (FIFA) has introduced the under-12 World Cup Festival with an aim to develop the game at the grassroots level and identify young talents. ````The scheme features skill tests, quiz contests, inter-active sessions and fun-games rather than competitive matches,```` he explained. Speaking on Rohit Football Academy, the OFA secretary said that the academy had been rendering commendable service by providing non-residential coaching to school-level footballers for the past three and half yars. ````The academy runs on the contribution of some veteran footballers, headed by former Santosh Trophy goalkeeper Amarendra Singh.

He said a 14-member Rohit Academy team would leave for New Delhi on Sunday, accompanied by coach Sukanta Dutta Ray.
