  FIH Men Series Finals: India, South Africa set final date

Host and highest ranked India (World Rank 5) South Africa (World Rank 16) registered contrasting semifinals wins in the FIH Mens Series Finals here at Kalinga Stadium Hockey Complex today. After conceding a goal early in the second minute, a ruthless India bounced back with vengeance to trample Asian Games gold medalist Japan (World Rank 18) 7-2, while South Africa too came from behind to edge out USA 2-1.

With the semifinal wins, both India and South Africa progressed to the FIH Olympic Qualifiers, scheduled to be held in October-November this year. The two teams will meet each other for the top spot of the FIH Mens Series Finals here tomorrow.

 

Ramandeep Singh scored a brace against Japan today to be adjudged the Man of the Match. This was the 76th win for India in 84 matches against Japan. In these 84 matches, India has the distinction of scoring a total of 322 goals. Drag-flick specialist Harmanreet Singh, who scored the first goal for India today, completed his 100th international appearance in the process.

Earlier in the first semifnal, Nicholas Spooner scored the match-winner in final minute to give South Africa a thrilling win. Their first goal was scored by Austin Smith. Tyson Dlungwana of South Africa was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Russia (World Rank 22) grabbed the fifth place of the tournament with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Poland (World Rank 21). Marat Khairullin of Russia was awarded as the Man of the Match.
