India win 5th successive SAFF Women title
22 Mar 2019 BHUBANESWAR

India continued its dominance at the SAFF Women Championship by bagging the title for the fifth successive time with a 3-1 win over the hosts Nepal in the final at Sahid Rangashala Stadium in Biratnagar today. The win extended unbeaten run of India in the tournament history to 23 games. It was also sweet revenge for India, who had suffered a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Nepal last month in the league stage of the Four-Nation Women Tournament at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.

Defending champions Indian secured their berth in the final with a clinical 4-0 win over Bangladesh earlier on March 20. India reached semifinals with two wins and full six points in Group B. They decimated Maldives 6-0 and Sri Lanka 5-0 at the league stage.

Odisha defender Jabamani Tudu represented India in this tournament, which was the last opportunity for the team to fine tune their preparation for the crucial 2020 Olympic Qualifiers Round 2, slated to be held in Myanmar from April 1 to 9. Football Association of Odisha secretary Sanjay Behera congratulated Jabamani for helping India win the title and announced a cash award of Rs 10,000 for her.
