  Odisha plays host to Sub-jr Natl Volleyball Championship

Chandigarh boys and West Bengal girls won the titles in the 41st Sub-junior National Volleyball Championship, which was held at KIIT University Campus in Bhubaneswar from 23 to 28 February, 2019. Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat finished second and third respectively in boys section.

West Bengal girls achieved a hat-trick by emerging champions for the third successive year. Haryana and Rajasthan secured second and third positions respectively, behind West Bengal. The championship was organised by Odisha Volleyball Association (OVA), in association with KIIT-Deemed to be University and KISS, under the aegis of Volleyball Federation of India (VFI).

 

The campaign of hosts Odisha started and ended at the league stage. Odisha girls narrowly missed a quarterfinal berth as they finished third in Group C with three wins and two losses. Odisha boys contended themselves with fifth position in Group-A with one win and four defeats.

The championship was inaugurated by Odisha Sports & Youth Services Department Commissioner-cum-Secretary Vishal Kumar Dev in the presence of Odisha Mining Corporation Managing Director R Vineel Krishna, VFI secretary general Ram Avatar Singh Jhakhar and OVA president Subodh Kumar Routray.

Police IG Amitabh Thakur handed over the trophies in the closing ceremony. KIIT & KISS founder Prof Achyuta Samanta, VFI president S Vasudevan, OVA working president Sanjay Das and secretary Dr Gaganendu Dash were present on the occasion.

The championship featured 25 boys and 22 girls teams. This was the second time that a volleyball national event was hosted by Odisha. The earlier one was the Junior National, held at KIIT campus in 2009.

Feb 23: Odisha beat West Bengal 3-1 (26-24, 25-20, 12-25, 25-18).
Feb 24: Odisha lost to Rajasthan 0-3 (19-25, 14-25, 14-25).
Feb 25: Odisha lost to Kerala 1-3 (20-25, 27-25, 14-25, 11-25).
Feb 26: Odisha lost to Maharashtra 1-3 (20-25, 20-25, 25-20, 20-25).
Feb 26: Odisha lost to Bihar 0-3 (21-25, 15-25, 21-25).

GIRLS (Group-C):
Feb 23: Odisha lost to Kerala 1-3 (22-25, 25-18, 20-25, 18-15.
Feb 24: Odisha beat Madhya Pradesh 3-2 (15-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-18, 17-15).
Feb 25: Odisha beat Pondicherry 3-0 (25-5, 25-6, 25-8).
Feb 25: Odisha beat Delhi 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-14).
Feb 26: Odisha lost to Haryana 0-3 (15-25, 9-25, 17-25).
