Sahid Nagar indoor hall gets facelift
17 Jul 2007

The gymnasium-cum-indoor hall at Sahid Nagar, Bhubaneswar received a big facelift with the commissioning of wooden flooring and lighting system today. The new facilities, costing around Rs 57.5 lakh, were inaugurated by State Sports Minister Debasis Nayak. The facelift also featured civil works, including leak repairing of the aluminium roof, painting of the walls, construction of new path with chequered tiles, granite flooring of steps and renovation of entrance doors.

The wooden flooring, covering an area of 34.20 x 21.00 metres, and the civil work, costing around Rs 48 lakh have been executed by the Works Department. The Rs 9.51 lakh-worth lighting work, executed by the General Electrical Department, features 37 number of 400-watt metal halide lamps. The markings of four badminton courts on the wooden flooring gave the impression that the indoor hall henceforth would be used exclusively for the shuttle game. But sources in the State Sports Directorate said badminton and table tennis would continue to share the hall as before.

However, both Sports Minister Nayak and Secretary Pattnaik clarified that Sports Department would come out with a guideline for the use of the indoor hall facilities under the ‘Pay and Play’ scheme. But it remains to be seen how much time the authorities take to work out the guideline for the users. That is because some more infrastructure facilities are lying idle for lack of such a guideline. The latest example is the lighting system at Kalinga Stadium tennis complex. Four hard-courts of the complex were illuminated on June 7 earlier this year. Surprisingly, lamps from two of the five poles were removed one day after its commissioning. Since its inauguration, the lighting system remains as showpieces.
