Mosco moving at a snail``s pace
12 Jul 2006

Motorsports, one of the fast growing disciplines in the world, is moving at a snail``s pace in Orissa. It is evident that since its inception in 1987 the Motor Sports Club of Orissa (MOSCO) has not been able to organise more than one event a year. Lack of sponsorship and infrastructure are the major reasons for which the sport is languishing in the State. ``Conducting a motorsport event of modest nature involves expenditure in lakhs. We get sponsorship only in thousands. On most occasions, club members spend on their own,```` says Mosco secretary Pradip Sarkar.

According to Mosco``s event manager Ranjan Kumar Kanungo, the club spent Rs 1.5 lakh to organise the Temple City Challenge Monsoon Rally here on Sunday last. Despite getting sponsorship support from 10 local automobile, tyre and lubricant dealers, the club could not raise more than Rs 1 lakh. Mosco needs bigger sponsors to be able to conduct events on a regular basis. But big sponsors are not forthcoming, lamented Sarkar.

Despite being in the game for nearly two decades, Mosco has no infrastructure worth its name. Each time it wants to conduct an event it has to spend a large sum on preparation of new track. Surprisingly, Mosco has not made any worthwhile effort to develop a permanent track. ``When we are struggling to generate funds for competitions, from where we will get the money to invest in a permanent track?```` asked Kanungo. But he was quick to say that setting up of a permanent track definitely occupies a prominent place in Mosco``s future plan. ``We will appeal to the State Government to allot three acres to Mosco to help it implement the plan,```` he stated. Mosco also has plans to reconstitute itself and become more active. ``We are aiming to take in some influential people as office-bearers, who can help Mosco realise the bigger goals,```` Sarkar said as sign off.
