  Entry denied to Kalinga Stadium
10 Sep 2006

It’s now clear, the right hand in the State Sports Department does not know what the left hand is doing. Management of Kalinga Stadium, the pride of Bhubaneswar and Orissa is an ideal example. Supposed to function under supervision of the State Directorate of Sports and Youth Services, the international-standard stadium, in reality, has become a puppet in the hands of its in-charge and even the security personnel.

Body text 2 The security staff turned away many sportspersons during the day, saying ‘‘Today is Orissa Bandh. There will be no activities inside the stadium,’’ When the deprived sportspersons wanted to know whether the ‘no-play’ order had been issued by the Directorate, the security personnel’s reply was: ‘‘I don’t know. But our chief has instructed us to do so.’’ But the security chief cited a different reason. ‘‘Monday is weekly off day. Nobody uses the stadium on Mondays,’’ he said. The in-charge P K Sahu came with yet another explanation. ‘‘Entry into stadium will be allowed after 4.00 pm. I can not say more in this matter. You may contact the Directorate,’’ he said over telephone. When the disappointed sportspersons did so, Assistant Sports Director Saroj Kumar Das finally came to their rescue. He denied imposition of any official restriction on the use of the stadium during Bandh or Mondays. ‘‘Go and play. I will speak to the in-charge and the security staff,’’ he assured.

After entering the stadium, the sportspersons were surprised to see that the inmates of the sports hostel and many other sportspersons were doing their practice as usual. ‘‘What sort of rule is this? asked a tennis player. ‘‘Missing practice for a day is a big loss for me. I also felt harrassed as I had to wait for two hours at the stadium gate,’’ complained a rugby player. ‘‘The stadium authorities should facilitate the optimum use of the facility. But what they are doing is the opposite,’’ Orissa Rugby Football Association secretary U K Mohanty.
