  Shuttlers Rutaparna, Swetaparna achieve success
15 Dec 2019 BHUBANESWAR

Rising Odisha badminton star Rutaparna Panda and her younger sisters Swetaparna achieved a rare feat with the former finishing womens doubles runners-up at the Bangladesh International Challenge 2019 in Dhaka, Bangladesh and the latter making her international debut at Badminton Asia Junior Championship in Surabaya, Indonesia this week.

Rutaparna and her India partner Maneesha K settled as runners-up after losing to top seed Malaysia pair of Tan Pearly Koong Le and Thinaah Muralitharan 20-22, 19-21 in the hard-fought women doubles final match at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Indoor Stadium in Dhaka today.

Earlier in the semifinals, Rutaparna and Maneesha eliminated second seed Thailand combination of Ruethaichanok Laisuan and Supamart Mingchua 21-15, 24-22.

Rutaparna also entered the fray in mixed doubles with Shivam Sharma as her partner. But the campaign of the Indian duo ended on a sad note in the quarterfinals as it conceded the match after the first game following an injury to Sharma.

Swetaparna took part in U-15 mixed doubles event of the Junior Asian Championship at GOR Bulutangkis Sudirman in Surabaya with K Sathwik Reddy as her partner. The Indian pair reached quarterfinals before losing to Thailand opponents Adisak Prasertphetmanee and Warisara Dansoonthornwong 23-21, 23-25, 16-21.

India asserted supremacy in U-15 girls singles event of the Asian championship with Tasnim Mir and Tara Shah emerging champion and runner-up respectively. In the all-India final, Tasnim beat Tara 17-21, 21-11, 21-19.
