  Swetaparna wins maiden Natl gold; Silver for Ayush

Swetaparna Panda made host Odisha proud by winning the U-15 mixed doubles gold medal with parter Sathwik Reddy K of Telangana in the Yonex-Sunrise 33rd National Sub-Junior Badminton Championship 2019 that concluded at the East Coast Railway Indoor Stadium here today.

This was the first National championship medal in for both Swetaparna and Sathwik, who beat third seeded Chandigarh-Haryana combination of Samarveer and Rijul Saini in the final 21-14, 21-8.

Odisha squandered another gold medal as Ayush Pattanayak and his partner Suhas V of Karnataka lost in the U-17 boys doubles final to Rajasthan pair of Himanshu Khatana of Shubham Patel by narrow margin.

 

The silver was also the maiden National championship medal for Ayush. Suhas, however, compensated his doubles defeat by emerging U-17 mixed doubles champion with partner Janani Ananthakumar of his home state.

Asian Junior runner-up Tara Shah (Maharashtra), who was on course for a double crown, suffered biggest heartbreak of the championship as she lost in the finals of both U-15 and U-17 girls singles events.

Budding shuttlers of Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Haryana shared six out of a total of 10 gold medals in the six-day championship, which was organised for the first time in Odisha. Haryana bagged the two gold in U-15 girls singles and U-17 girls doubles events.

Karnataka, Assam and Uttar Pradesh captured one yellow metal each. Tamil Nadu also secured two silver medals besided the two two gold in U-17 boys singles and U-15 girls doubles. The two gold for Rajasthan came in U-15 and U-17 boys doubles categories.

Odisha Finance Minister, Niranjan Pujari, Industries Minsiter Capt Dibya Shankar Mishra, Sports & Youth Services Commissioner-cum-Secretary Vishal K Dev, Championship Convenor, Rajesh Prabhakar Patil, Badminton Association of India (BAI) General Secretary, Ajay Kumar Singhania, Odisha State Badminton Association (OSBA) President Rohit Pujari and Secretary Nileen Kumar handed over medals, trophies and cash prizes at the closing ceremony.
