  State Sr Open Chess: Nayak clinches title hat-trick

Rajesh Nayak achieved a creditable hat-trick by winning the title for the third successive year in the Odisha State Senior Open Chess Championship, the 60th edition of which concluded at Venya Paradise in Balasore today.

Rajesh Nayak (Puri), Nilsu Pattnayak (Cuttack) and Rakesh Kumar Nayak (Khordha) tied for the top honour with 7.5 points each from nine rounds. But on the basis of Buchholtz Tiebreak score, Rajesh Nayak was declared champion, while Nilsu Pattnayak and Rakesh Nayak finished first and second runner-up respectively.

Women Fide Master Rutumbara Bidhar secured the fourth position in the final rankings with seven points to her name. The top four finishers qualified to represent Odisha in the National Senior Open Championship, which is scheduled to be held in Kolkata from 8 to 18 December, 2019.

 

A total of 105 players from 12 districts participated in the latest edition of the State Senior Championship, which was organised by Balasore District Chess Association, under the aegis of All Odisha Chess Association.

Dr Prafulla Kumar Acharya graced the closing ceremony as chief guest and handed over the trophies and cash prizes in the presence of BDCA president Debasis Chakraborty and secretary Manoranjan Panda. The five-day tournament carried a total prize fund of Rs 50,000, including Rs 8,000 for the champion.
