  KIYG: Cyclists Swasti, Dinesh make Odisha proud

Cyclists proved most successful for Odisah in the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games )KIYG) with Swasti Singh and Dinesh Kumar bagging a total of four medals within four days in Guwahati. The medals included three gold and one silver.

Rourkela girls Swasti emerged as the most successful Odisha sportsperson of the Games, capturing two gold and one silver. She started her campaign on a modest note, securing the silver medal in U-21 girls road race (60km), clocking 2:11:52.21 on January 13.

Swasti then captured her first gold in U-21 scratch race (7.5 kms) at Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE), Guwahati, clocking 14:53.232s on January 14. She bagged her second gold in U-21 girls individual pursuit (3000m) with a timing of 4:20.237 today.

 

Dinesh Kumar, a trainee of SAI Cycling Academy, Delhi, won his gold medal in U-21 boys time trial event on January 12. Air Force employee and son of a small time shop-keeper, Dinesh Kumar often helped his father during his childhood in Rourkela.

In 2015, he went to Kerala for the national track championships and performed well enough to get selected to enter SAI, Delhi. Two years later, he was picked up by the Indian Air Force and he has been practicing at the NIAS, Patiala since then.
