Padmini set to embark on "Mission IM"
10 Jul 2008

India``s youngest Woman International Master (WIM) Padmini Rout is gearing up to establish her place in higher levels of chess and gain the required norms to become an International Master (IM) by the end of the year. Winner of two Asian, one Commonwealth and four National titles already, the local lass has several opportunities before her to realise the goal.

"She will be playing four international and two National championships within the next three and half months. She has prepared well for the hectic schedule ahead and we are optimistic she would do well to get the desired success, "said Padmini``s father Dr Ashok Rout on Thursday. Padmini will kick-start her "Mission" with the Asian Youth (under-14 girls) Championship, which is scheduled to be held at Teheran from July 15 to 22. Last year, she finished fourth in the same tournament at Dubai. Her next destination will be Turkey, where she will compete in the World Junior (under-20) championship from August 2 to 14. "In the last edition of the championship at Armenia, I finished 28th, but completed my third and final norm to become a WIM," recalls Padmini. Before her other two international engagements, petite Padmini will match her wit against the cream of the country in the Women``s National "A" (from Sept 2) and Open National "B" (from Sept 15) championships at New Delhi and Goa respectively. The Orissa yougster``s second leg of international engagements will commence with the Commonwealth Championship at Nagpur (Sept 28 to Oct 6). "Commonwealth has become one of my favourite tournaments as I have been winning the girls" under-14 gold medal in this event for the past two years, reveals Padmini. She will wind up "Mission IM" by participating in the girls under-14 age category of the World Youth Championship at Vietnam from October 19 to 29. Speaking on her chances in the forthcoming tests, Padmini said she was optimistic of winning titles at the Asian and World Youth as well as the Commonwealth meets. Her optimism comes out of the coaching she and her statemates Anwesh Upadhyaya and Utkal Ranjan Sahu have been receiving from Ukrain Grandmaster Georgy Timoschenko here for past three weeks. "GM Timoschenko is a highly experienced coach. His tips has made me mentally stronger and technically superior. He has also taught us how to fight till the last move and wriggle out of critical situations, disclosed Padmini. We the parents spent around Rs 4 lakh from our pocket to bring the Ukrain GM here for the coaching camp. But the quality of coaching he rendered was worth the expense, admitted Dr Rout. Meanwhile, the busy chess schedule has forced Padmini to neglect her studies for the time being. "I will return to the study table in November and start preparation for the CBSE Board examination," said Padmini, a 10th standard student of DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur.
