Odisha bagged one gold and two bronze medals in the the 72nd Men and 35th Women Senior National Weightlifting Championship, which was held at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra in Kolkata from 2 to 7 February, 2020.

Ace woman lifter Jhilli Dalabehera won the lone gold medal in women 45 kg class, representing Indian Railways. She lifted 69 kg in snatch and 91 kg in clean & jerk for a total of 160 kg.

Besides Jhilli, as many as 17 lifters represented Odisha in this championship. The two bronze medals were secured by Kanhu Sahu and Suresh Yadav. Kanhu won the bronze in 73 kg category with a personal best of 128 kg in snatch and 162 kg in clean & jerk for a total of 290 kg.

Kanhu belongs to Berhampur and currently honing his skills at TENVIC Sports High Performance Centre in Bhubaneswar where he joined in April 2019. Suresh Yadav won bronze medal in 96 kg category lifting a total of 310 kg, which included 140 kg in snatch and 170 kg in clean & jerk.

According to media reports, Yadav trained at Bira Hanuman Club in Berhampur for some time before joining Pune-based Sports Academy. One sorry aspect of weightlifting in Odisha is that office-bearers of Odisha Weightlifting Association are not supportive in providing information regarding participation and achievements of state lifters in national and international events.
