  Mamata bags Ekalabya Award

Young woman rower Mamata Jena has been selected to receive the 15th Ekalabya Award for the year 2007. The award committee unanimously chose Jena among 13 shortlisted candidates at a meeting held here on Wednesday. The Cuttack-based rower will be given a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and citation at a function to be held later. Besides Jena, women`s National `B` chess champion Kiran Manisha Mohanty and promising athlete Dandu Soren were picked for the year`s two runner-up awards, which carry citations and Rs 10,000 each.

 

Jena got the prestigious Ekalabya Award for her remarkable performance during the past two years. She won a bronze medal in women`s coxless four event of the 11th Asian Rowing Championship at Hyderabad. She also fared well in many international events including the 15th Asian Games at Doha in November, 2006. A trainee of the Jagatpur-based SAI Watersports Hostel, Jena secured gold medals in successive National rowing championship (2006 and 2007). Ekalabya Award was instituted by Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT), the charitable wing of IMFA Group in 1993. Past recepients of the award include athlete Rachita Mistry (Panda); cricketers Shiv Sundar Das, Debasis Mohanty; hockey players Dilip Tirkey, Prabodh Tirkey, Ignace Tirkey and William Xalxo. Announcing the names of this year`s award winners, IMPaCT trustee Baijayant Panda said: ``The award has been and will attract young talents and inspire them to perform better at the national and international arena.``
